Ubuntu Phone vs Firefox OS Battle: A Complete Comparison of Mobile Operating Systems

World of Technology is not much different from other markets, as many of leading manufacturers are trying to place their products and services in the optimum position. We should mention that competition is not much visible unless a powerful rival enters the stage. In that sense, world of mobile platforms is also a huge place of competition and you can call it as ‘Mobile Platform War’ in simpler words. As you might know, iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone are leading mobile platforms available in market and powers large number of Smart devices. Now, it seems like two open sourced giants are also approaching the WAR area! Yes, we are talking about Firefox OS by Mozilla and Ubuntu Phone by Canonical.

We can guess that the competition will be much larger than we expect as both of manufacturers have support of open source developers and community. Hence, both of them are stuffing their Operating Systems with high-end features for competition. Actually, the competition is for the fourth place because Apple, Google and Blackberry already dominate the rest. Still, Mozilla and Canonical could assure their products a good position if they can bring something really useful and different from the current mobile applications. However, we can compare both of these platforms based on their features and specifications in order to get the picture of OS to get the fourth chance. Let us start from giving you an overview about both of operating systems.
Overview on Both.
As we mentioned earlier, Firefox OS is a product from Mozilla, the company popular through their world famous web browser, Mozilla Firefox. Even though there may be a word of confusion, Firefox OS is a HTML5 based Operating System for mobile devices. This simply means that the running floor of the platform is HTML5 and hence application development is easier than we expect. However, the OS will support your applications, no matter, which you have chosen among tough programming languages or HTML5. OS will help HTML5 apps to make use of hardware of your cell phone by means of JavaScript and Web based APIs. As a noticeable feature, the OS seems to be running fine on standard Android compatible hardware and Raspberry Pi. Developer version of Firefox OS is available as well as the option to simulate in Mozilla Firefox browser.

If you have ever diverted your techy mind to the world of Linux, you might have heard about Ubuntu Linux, which is a popular Linux distribution with a wide range of users. What they have done with Ubuntu Phone is shrinking the complete desktop OS to a portable and small one by keeping the same Unity Interface. Hence, you can get the same User Interface on your Smartphone itself if you love the same in your Linux PC. According to latest reports, Ubuntu Phone current has support for social sharing options, cellular data etc. that can make the device perfectly ‘smart’ and enough to compete with rivals. Just like all other developing platforms, a beta version of Ubuntu Phone is also available so that courageous (only if you have enough courage to play with Linux stuff) can test Ubuntu in their android running Smartphone devices.

Competition!

When it comes to the success of a mobile platform, the main part is all about the user community. Of course, in case of Firefox OS, they can get many people to use the OS ranging from normal Mozilla Firefox users up to geeky individuals. Nevertheless, in case of Ubuntu Phone, we might have to bear a piece of doubt as most of normal users are still hesitating to stick on with Linux stuff even though Android has become a huge success. However, Canonical will have to work hard for bringing the majority of non-Linux community users. We would have to say that the Firefox OS is growing fast when we hear the support of manufacturers to introduce Firephones soon.
Though it may a bit geeky and tough, Ubuntu Phone has a great feature in it. You can connect your ‘Firephone’ to a monitor accompanied by a keyboard to get a full-fledged Ubuntu PC. In this mode, you can expand the screen of your Smartphone and manage calls and other stuff through a keyboard and other peripherals. Just as the mentioned one, we can expect more features from Canonical as it is a team of geeks. Thus, we can conclude that Ubuntu Phone will be rather able to satisfy users belonging to geeks.

Conclusion:-

Even though both of Operating Systems seem to be made for different kinds of users, Ubuntu Phone vs Firefox OS Battle may become rivals for current giants including Android. Anyways, we can wait and see the real beasts soon.
